The maiden edition of the Yenagoa International 10km Road Race was successfully held on Saturday, drawing participants from across Nigeria and several countries around the world.
Governor Douye Diri, who took part in the race, described the event as a “great experience” and a significant step toward advancing sports development in Nigeria, particularly in Bayelsa State.
The race, which has been officially sanctioned by World Athletics, witnessed an impressive turnout of local and international athletes, further positioning Yenagoa as an emerging hub for global sporting events.
Governor Diri noted that the initiative is part of the state government’s broader commitment to promoting sports and encouraging youth participation, while also showcasing Bayelsa to the international community.
“We are taking Bayelsa to the world and bringing the world to Bayelsa,” he said, highlighting the presence of foreign participants who traveled to Yenagoa for the competition.
Beyond the excitement of the race, the governor emphasized its long-term economic benefits, stating that such events have the potential to drive sports tourism and stimulate local economic growth.
He also attributed the successful hosting of the event to the prevailing peace and security in the state, noting that ongoing investments in security have created an enabling environment for large-scale international activities.
Governor Diri congratulated all the winners and expressed appreciation to World Athletics and the event organisers for approving and supporting the race in Yenagoa.
The successful hosting of the maiden race has placed Bayelsa State on the global map once again—this time through sports.
