The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, on Saturday hosted the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, alongside other prominent political figures at his private residence in Port Harcourt, following the final burial rites of late Senator Barinada Barry Mpigi.
The gathering came shortly after the conclusion of a well-attended burial ceremony held in honour of the late lawmaker, who died in London on February 19, 2026, at the age of 64 after a brief illness.
The private reception drew a cross-section of Nigeria’s political elite, including serving and former governors, lawmakers, and party leaders, who had earlier joined family members, associates, and constituents in paying their last respects during the burial activities in Rivers State.
Sources familiar with the event described the atmosphere as solemn yet reflective, with leaders using the moment to console the bereaved family and honour the legacy of the late senator. Wike and his wife, Hon. Justice Eberechi Suzette Wike, were said to have personally received guests at the residence.
The burial ceremonies, which spanned several days, featured tributes highlighting Mpigi’s contributions to public service and his role in Rivers State politics. At an earlier night of tribute, Wike had emotionally recounted his relationship with the deceased, describing him as a loyal ally and dependable associate.
The FCT Minister also pledged financial support to the family, announcing a N500 million fund to assist those left behind, while urging political associates to go beyond symbolic gestures in showing solidarity.
Although the full list of attendees at the private reception was not officially disclosed, the presence of the Senate President underscored the national significance of the occasion. Many of the dignitaries had earlier received the late senator’s remains at the airport and participated in the funeral rites.
Late Senator Mpigi was widely regarded as a grassroots politician and bridge-builder, whose death has created a vacuum within the political landscape of Rivers State.
As condolence visits continue in Abuja and Port Harcourt, tributes have continued to pour in from across the country, reflecting the impact of his life and service.
The post-burial reception hosted by Wike further highlighted the enduring ties among Nigeria’s political class, even in moments of grief.
