Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, on Friday joined his Bayelsa State counterpart, Senator Douye Diri, to receive President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a one-day official visit to Bayelsa State.
The presidential visit was marked by the inauguration of four major projects executed by the Diri administration, notably a 60-megawatt gas turbine power project designed to enhance electricity supply and stimulate economic growth in the state.
Upon his return to Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara proceeded to Beth-El Anglican Church in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area, where he attended a solemn service of songs held in honour of the late Senator Barinada Mpigi.
The memorial gathering drew family members, political associates and well-wishers, who paid glowing tributes to the late lawmaker who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District. The event was characterised by deep reflection, unity and heartfelt remembrance of his life and service.
In his remarks, Governor Fubara described the late senator as a principled and forthright leader who remained committed to the welfare of his people. He noted that Senator Mpigi’s life was defined by integrity, courage and impactful public service.
“I had an engagement in Bayelsa, an event beyond my control, but what is most important is that I am here to pay my last respects to a senator who represented my senatorial district,” the governor stated.
He acknowledged that while gatherings such as a service of songs provide some measure of comfort, only God can truly console the bereaved family and heal the pain of loss.
Reflecting on the inevitability of death, Governor Fubara observed that although humans may exert control over many aspects of life, death remains a reality beyond human influence.
He further noted that he had earlier expressed his condolences in a message to the family, stressing that his thoughts on the late senator’s character and contributions had already been fully conveyed.
Governor Fubara concluded by affirming that the legacy of Senator Mpigi—anchored on service, courage and integrity—would continue to inspire generations, adding that his contributions to public life would not be forgotten.
