Ebonyi Government Mourns Passing Of Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu

The Ebonyi State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the 3rd Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing his passing as a monumental loss to the state, the Church, and the nation.

In an official statement issued on Saturday, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru said he received the news of the Bishop’s passing with a heavy heart, though consoled by the eternal promises of God.

The governor paid glowing tribute to the late cleric, describing him as a revered spiritual leader whose life was marked by humility, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to the service of God and humanity. He noted that Bishop Chukwu’s death signifies the end of an era of profound spiritual guidance, moral clarity, and fatherly leadership.
According to the statement, the late Bishop, a native of Ededeagu Umuezeokohu in Ezza North Local Government Area, distinguished himself as a symbol of faith, a promoter of peace, and a tireless advocate for justice, unity, and love. Through his pastoral mission, he touched countless lives, strengthened families, and contributed significantly to the spiritual growth of the people.

Governor Nwifuru further acknowledged the late Bishop’s voice of wisdom and counsel, particularly during challenging times, noting that his guidance was invaluable to both leaders and the faithful.

Reflecting on the Bishop’s life, the governor cited the biblical passage in 2 Timothy 4:7, saying the late cleric lived a life worthy of the scripture: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

On behalf of the government and people of Ebonyi State, the governor extended condolences to the Catholic Church, including the Supreme Pontiff, the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, as well as the clergy, religious, and lay faithful. He also sympathized with the immediate and extended family of the deceased.

He emphasized that Bishop Chukwu’s contributions to moral discipline, social harmony, and community development would not be forgotten, adding that his death is a significant loss beyond the Church.

The statement concluded with prayers for the repose of the Bishop’s soul and for strength for all those grieving his passing.

“Adieu, faithful servant of God. Rest in the bosom of the Lord,” the governor said.
