Umahi Intervenes in Amasiri–Ose-Edda Crisis, Urges Calm and Backs Governor Nwifuru’s Peace Efforts

The Honourable Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, David Nweze Umahi, has spoken out on the ongoing crisis between the people of Amasiri in Afikpo Local Government Area and Ose-Edda in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, describing the conflict as “unfortunate” and calling for immediate de-escalation and reconciliation.

In a strongly worded but conciliatory statement, Senator Umahi emphasized the deep historical, cultural, and familial ties between the two communities, stressing that Amasiri and Ose-Edda are “brothers and sisters” who have coexisted peacefully for generations.

Historical Context of the Dispute

The former governor noted that the land dispute predates his administration (2015–2023), but assured that during his tenure, deliberate and structured efforts were made to address the matter, including related boundary disagreements involving Amasiri and Amangwu-Edda.

He recalled that the present Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, who served as Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly during his administration, played a key role in legislative and peace-building efforts aimed at maintaining stability and ensuring justice.

According to Umahi, significant progress had been made toward a lasting settlement, particularly with federal intervention. He referenced the supportive disposition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who approved the allocation of an army depot settlement to cover the disputed land, thereby creating a framework for permanent resolution.

He further stated that Governor Nwifuru had advanced the peace agreement to the level of physical demarcation before the recent outbreak of violence that led to loss of lives and destruction of property in Ose-Edda.

Strong Condemnation of Violence

Umahi condemned the violence in its entirety, describing it as tragic and unacceptable in a modern society.

“I condemn this incident in totality and wonder why such inhumanity to man could occur between brothers and sisters over land in this modern civilization,” he stated.

The Minister disclosed that since the outbreak of the crisis, he has remained in constant communication with leaders of Amasiri, particularly those who served during his administration, commending them for their restraint and cooperation with the state government. He also revealed that he has been in regular discussions with Governor Nwifuru—speaking with him almost twice weekly—to support ongoing efforts aimed at preventing escalation and reprisals.

Support for Security Measures

Addressing criticisms surrounding the state government’s actions, including the closure of schools and the imposition of a curfew (now partially relaxed), Umahi defended the measures as necessary security steps.

He stressed that Governor Nwifuru, as Chief Security Officer of the state, has a constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property and has discharged this duty without bias or favoritism.

“Those criticizing the Governor’s actions may not fully understand the grave security implications of the demands they are making,” Umahi said, noting that the situation involves brutal killings and large-scale destruction, requiring careful and professional security management.

He emphasized that the temporary restrictions were aimed primarily at safeguarding lives—especially those of Amasiri indigenes—while creating an atmosphere conducive for sincere reconciliation.

Appeal for Calm and Reconciliation

The former governor acknowledged that emotions remain high, particularly among the Edda people, warning that without careful management, the situation could deteriorate further.

He commended Governor Nwifuru for consistently appealing for calm and urged both communities to trust the peace process already underway.

“I fully join the Governor and the good people of Ebonyi State in appealing to both parties to trust the process, adhere to the steps already taken, and meet the peaceful conditions outlined,” he said.

Umahi also urged the people of Amasiri to understand that the state government’s actions are primarily protective and not punitive, reiterating that the ultimate goal is a thorough, just, and lasting peace between the two clans.

Encouragement to the Governor

Concluding his intervention, Senator Umahi encouraged Governor Nwifuru not to be distracted by criticism, but to remain focused on his constitutional mandate and continue to seek divine guidance in managing the sensitive situation.

The statement underscores growing calls from key political leaders in Ebonyi State for restraint, dialogue, and sustainable reconciliation as authorities intensify efforts to restore lasting peace between the two historically connected communities.
