Tinubu Orders Immediate Halt to Impeachment Moves Against Rivers Governor Fubara

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly intervened in the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, ordering an immediate halt to all impeachment plans against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The directive followed a closed-door meeting held on February 8, 2026, aimed at resolving the lingering political tension between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, President Tinubu warned that the impeachment process against the sitting governor must stop forthwith, stressing that political instability in Rivers State was undermining governance and development.

The President was said to have emphasized that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, by virtue of his office, remains the number one citizen and dominant political authority in Rivers State, irrespective of party affiliations. He reportedly cautioned that this constitutional status must be respected and not contested.

President Tinubu also expressed concern over what he described as continued political confrontations, unnecessary rallies, and unguarded public statements by the FCT Minister and his supporters, warning that such actions were capable of further destabilising the state. He reportedly made it clear that his administration would not tolerate actions capable of threatening peace and governance.

As part of the resolutions reached, Wike and his political allies were reportedly directed to withdraw from any impeachment plot and refocus their efforts on governance and public service.

Sources further disclosed that the President instructed the FCT Minister to formally recognise Governor Fubara as the political leader of Rivers State going forward.

In addition, it was gathered that the President directed that Governor Fubara’s loyalists should be fully recognised within the ruling party. One of the conditions reportedly agreed upon stated that the party structure in the state should align with the governor’s leadership, with no major political action to be taken without his consent or approval.

The intervention is seen as part of President Tinubu’s broader effort to restore political stability and ensure effective governance in Rivers State.
