Tinubu Mourns Reverend Jesse Jackson, Hails Him as ‘A Great Friend of Nigeria and Africa’

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned American civil rights leader and Baptist preacher, Jesse Jackson, describing him as a steadfast friend of Nigeria and a towering voice for justice across Africa and the world.

In a heartfelt tribute on Tuesday, the President said he joined “the rest of the world and the people of the United States of America” in mourning the death of the 84-year-old icon, whose life was defined by courage, compassion, and an unyielding commitment to human dignity.

President Tinubu noted that Reverend Jackson captured the global imagination as a young activist working alongside the legendary Martin Luther King Jr. in the struggle for racial equality and the rights of the oppressed in the United States. He said Jackson’s activism transcended borders, making him a moral force not only in America but also in Africa.
According to the President, Reverend Jackson was a formidable voice against apartheid in South Africa, playing a key role in galvanising international support for sanctions against the racist regime and campaigning vigorously for the release of Nelson Mandela and other leaders of the African National Congress.

Tinubu also recalled Jackson’s principled stance during Nigeria’s years under military rule, when he spoke firmly in defence of human rights and democratic governance. He served as Special Envoy to Nigeria and Africa under former U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1997 and 1999, helping to strengthen diplomatic engagement and advocate for democratic reforms across the continent.

The President further acknowledged Jackson’s efforts in fostering ties between African leaders and the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus, thereby amplifying Africa’s voice in Washington and advancing the cause of good governance and civil liberties.

“Reverend Jackson lived a remarkable life as a strong voice for the universal ideals of justice and human progress,” Tinubu said, reflecting on the enduring power of the cleric’s message to “keep hope alive” even in the face of adversity.

President Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of Reverend Jackson’s soul and extended condolences to his family, associates, and admirers around the world, noting that his legacy of courage and hope would continue to inspire generations to come.
