Slain Bayelsa Youth: Gov Diri Directs Police to Fast-Track Investigation and Prosecution

Yenagoa — Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has directed the Nigeria Police Force to expedite investigation and prosecution over the killing of a 24-year-old youth, Patrick Peresuodei, describing the incident as a clear case of murder that must not go unpunished.

Peresuodei, an indigene of Amassoma community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was reportedly assaulted following an online dispute with one Bodmas Kemepadei, an incident that later resulted in his death and sparked widespread public outrage.

Governor Diri gave the directive on Wednesday while speaking during the 181st State Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa.
The governor said the state government became involved immediately after the incident, stressing that any act of murder was an offence against the state and not just the victim’s family.

He disclosed that after receiving briefings from relevant officials, he directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to take over the matter on behalf of the state to ensure diligent investigation and prosecution.

According to Diri, the process must be swift and thorough to ensure that all those found culpable are brought to justice.

While condemning the killing, the governor appealed to residents of Amassoma and youths across the state to cooperate with the police and provide useful information that would aid investigations and help the family of the deceased obtain justice.

He assured Bayelsans that the state government would not shield anyone involved in the crime.
Governor Diri also condoled with the families of victims of a recent road accident involving mourners returning from the burial of the late Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, which claimed the lives of two persons and left several others injured.

He described the deceased as patriotic Bayelsans who would be remembered for their service to the state and assured their families of the government’s support.

The governor further commended the Ewhrudjakpo family and the Ofoni community for their cooperation throughout the burial activities.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the Ewhrudjakpo family and the Ofoni community, led by Dr. Oyowvin Osusu, visited Governor Diri to express appreciation to the Bayelsa State Government for its support and coordination during the burial rites.
