FROM DUST TO DRIVE: EGWI–AFARA–MBA ROAD NEARS COMPLETION IN MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE BOOST FOR ETCHE

The long-awaited transformation of the 12.3-kilometre Egwi–Afara–Mba Road in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State is fast becoming a reality, as the once-neglected stretch now stands 85 per cent complete.

The project, which was flagged off on December 12, 2024, by the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, marked a turning point for residents who had endured years of hardship caused by the deplorable condition of the road.
For decades, the Egwi–Afara–Mba corridor symbolized neglect—plagued by potholes, erosion, and impassable sections that hampered movement, slowed economic activity, and exposed commuters to safety risks. Farmers struggled to transport produce to markets, traders counted losses due to delays, and residents bore the brunt of increased transportation costs.

However, hope was rekindled when Governor Fubara, widely regarded by supporters as a leader committed to people-centered governance, intervened to restore the vital link road. Today, the transformation is visible and significant.
Construction work has advanced steadily, with asphalt laying now completed across the entire stretch. Road marking is set to commence in earnest as the project enters its final phase ahead of commissioning. The reconstruction is expected to significantly ease mobility, boost trade, and enhance socio-economic activities across Egwi, Afara, Mba, and adjoining communities.

Residents say the project is already changing the narrative in the area. Improved road access is anticipated to reduce travel time, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and attract new business opportunities, particularly in agriculture and small-scale commerce, which are dominant economic activities in Etche.
The contractor handling the project, Setraco Nigeria Limited, has been commended for maintaining quality standards and ensuring steady progress on site. Observers note that the near-completion of the road reflects the administration’s emphasis on delivering tangible infrastructure that directly impacts livelihoods.

When commissioned, the Egwi–Afara–Mba Road is expected to serve as a strategic economic artery, improving connectivity within Etche and strengthening its integration with other parts of Rivers State.
For many residents, what was once a dusty symbol of abandonment has now risen into a corridor of renewed opportunity—an enduring testament to the power of responsive leadership and sustained development efforts.
