Former Majority FM Applicant Disputes Claims Linking Station to Tinubu’s Campaign

A former applicant to Majority FM, Teenar U. Gene, has dismissed claims circulating in some quarters that the radio station was established to serve as a campaign platform for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to Gene, the narrative does not align with events surrounding the station’s short-lived operations in 2021.

Gene disclosed that she applied for a position at Majority FM in 2021, was interviewed, and subsequently invited to resume work at the station. He said the station was expected to be managed by Paul, one half of the popular Paul and Silas comedy duo.

However, the station reportedly shut down abruptly on the very day commercial broadcasting was scheduled to commence.

She explained that information available at the time suggested that the closure followed a disagreement between the station’s Chief Operating Officer and Samuel Anyanwu, who was said to be politically influential and close to both a serving minister and the then Governor of Rivers State.

“From what we were told through the grapevine, that disagreement led to the sudden shutdown of the station,” Gene stated.
Addressing recent claims that the radio station, located opposite Pleasure Park, was set up to promote Tinubu’s political interests, Gene described such assertions as misleading.

“From what I know, that claim is entirely false,” he said, adding that the narrative appeared to be crafted to misinform the public and possibly mislead political authorities.

Gene further alleged that the station was more likely intended to advance the personal presidential ambition of the minister involved at the time, an ambition he said ended abruptly.

She stressed that it is inaccurate to suggest that Majority FM was built or revived to support Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, noting that the station’s shutdown occurred years before current political alignments.

The clarification comes amid renewed public discussions about the political use of media platforms ahead of future elections.
