Diri Leads Prosperity Walk, Flags Off Season 8 Of Annual Football Cup In Ovom

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, on Thursday morning led the weekly Prosperity Walk alongside the newly sworn-in Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, in a symbolic show of unity, vitality and commitment to the state’s development agenda.

The event, which has become a regular feature of the administration’s engagement with citizens, drew government officials, political appointees, youths and supporters who trooped out in large numbers to participate in the exercise. The Governor described the Prosperity Walk as more than a fitness routine, noting that it serves as a platform to reinforce the collective vision of the administration under its “Government of Assured Prosperity” mantra.
The outing also marked one of the first major public appearances of Dr. Akpe since his swearing-in as Deputy Governor. Observers say his participation underscores the seamless working relationship between the Governor and his deputy, as well as their shared resolve to consolidate on the gains recorded by the administration.

Shortly after the walk, the Governor proceeded to officially kick off Season 8 of the Annual Prosperity Football Cup at the main bowl of the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Ovom. The competition, widely regarded as one of the biggest grassroots football tournaments in the state, has continued to attract young talents from various communities across Bayelsa.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Diri reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to sports development, describing football as a powerful tool for youth engagement, talent discovery and social cohesion. He noted that sustained investment in grassroots sports would not only keep young people productively engaged but also create pathways for them to excel at national and international levels.

The Prosperity Football Cup, now in its eighth season, has grown in popularity and impact, producing promising players and fostering unity among communities. Stakeholders in the sports sector have commended the state government for consistently supporting the initiative despite economic challenges, describing it as a strategic investment in the future of Bayelsa youths.
The atmosphere at the sports complex was electric as football enthusiasts, supporters and community leaders gathered to witness the ceremonial kick-off. The Governor’s symbolic first kick signaled the official commencement of what promises to be another exciting and competitive season.

With the dual events of the Prosperity Walk and the football tournament flag-off, the Bayelsa State Government once again demonstrated its blend of health advocacy, youth empowerment and grassroots development as key pillars of its Assured Prosperity agenda.
