Diri Applauds Peaceful APC Ward Congresses in Bayelsa, Urges Unity for Development

Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has commended the peaceful conduct of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congresses held across the state on Wednesday, describing the exercise as rancour-free and a demonstration of political maturity.

The governor spoke in his hometown, Sampou, headquarters of Sampou/Kalama Ward 6 in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, shortly after participating in the congress.

Diri congratulated party delegates for unanimously electing new ward executives through consensus and affirmation, noting that the process reflected unity and shared purpose among members of the party in the state.
He stressed that politics should serve as a vehicle for unity and development rather than division, urging party faithful to sustain the spirit of oneness displayed during the exercise.

“We have all witnessed the affirmation by voice vote. This means that unanimously, the APC in my ward, Sampou/Kalama Ward 6 in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, has elected a new leadership,” the governor said.

He added that when political actors are united, development would come faster to communities, local government areas, and the state at large.
According to him, reports available to him indicated that the ward congresses were largely peaceful across Bayelsa, expressing optimism that the same atmosphere would prevail during the forthcoming local government and state congresses.

Diri further stated that the national leadership of the APC would be proud of the Bayelsa chapter for conducting hitch-free ward congresses that produced leaders without rancour.
He appreciated the party’s National Executive Council, the state caretaker committee led by Dr. Dennis Otiotio, and other party leaders for their roles in ensuring a smooth process. The governor also acknowledged the presence and contributions of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies that observed the exercise.

The Sampou/Kalama Ward 6 congress was conducted by the State Congress Election Committee led by Chief Frank Omare. Mr. Shedrach Fetuga emerged as chairman alongside other ward executives.

In his acceptance speech, Fetuga thanked party members for finding him and his fellow executives worthy of the mandate, pledging to strengthen the party’s base in the ward and work towards victory in future general elections, including the 2027 governorship poll.

The exercise was witnessed by the Chairman of the State Congress Screening Committee, Hon. Oghene Egoh, as well as INEC observer, Engr. Prince Erasmus.
