Bayelsa Cracks Down on Illicit Drugs, Vows More Demolitions; British Govt Commends State’s Crime Prevention Efforts
The Bayelsa State Government has intensified its fight against illicit drugs and criminal activities, pledging continued action against drug dens and illegal structures across the state.
Governor Senator Douye Diri issued the warning on Thursday during the 42nd State Security Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa, reflecting on last weekend’s demolition of a notorious drug dealers’ hideout, popularly called Aboki Quarters, at Yenizue-Gene. The operation was carried out by a combined team of security agencies.
Governor Diri stressed that similar operations will continue wherever such illegal locations are identified. He commended the service commanders for the swift action and warned that displaced drug peddlers attempting to relocate nearby would face continued scrutiny.
“I commend the Commissioner of Police, the 16 Brigade Commander, the Director of the State Security Services, and all involved for the operation at the illicit drug centre at Yenizue-Gene,” the governor said. “I understand there is a location opposite that site. I went there myself, and service commanders must ensure action is taken. We cannot continue to encourage shanties where drugs destroy the lives of our youths.”
Governor Diri clarified that the state remains a safe and hospitable place for non-indigenes to live and do business, emphasizing that the measures are targeted solely at criminal elements. He also condemned recent cult-related violence that claimed three lives, directing security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators.
The meeting was attended by a delegation from the British High Commission in Nigeria, led by Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever, who commended Bayelsa State for its commitment to crime prevention and youth development through the Brighter Futures programme. Launched in partnership with the state government, the initiative aims to curb cultism and drug abuse at the grassroots level, providing vulnerable youths with vocational skills and livelihood opportunities.
“Bayelsa has shown exemplary commitment to security and youth empowerment,” Lever said, noting that over 200 youths have already benefited from the programme, gaining skills and tools to engage in self-reliant work.
Commissioner for Youth Development, Alfred Nimizigha, who oversees the programme on behalf of the state government, praised Governor Diri for his unwavering support, highlighting that the initiative has focused on agriculture and other skill-based training to empower youths across the state.
The governor’s firm stance signals a strengthened crackdown on crime and drug-related activities, reinforcing Bayelsa’s position as one of Nigeria’s safest and most orderly states.
