Abia Governor Signs Senior Citizens Welfare Bill Into Law



The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has signed the Senior Citizens Welfare Bill into law, establishing a comprehensive social protection scheme for elderly residents of the state.

Under the new law, every Abia State citizen who is 60 years or older is entitled to a free monthly stipend, access to healthcare services at no cost, and additional welfare benefits to be provided by the state government for the duration of their lives.

Government officials said the legislation is aimed at strengthening social inclusion, reducing poverty among the elderly, and recognising the contributions of senior citizens to the development of the state.

The Senior Citizens Welfare Law is expected to take effect immediately, with relevant ministries and agencies mandated to develop implementation guidelines and rollout plans in the coming weeks.
