Soludo Orders One-Week Closure of Onitsha Main Market Over Monday Sit-At-Home

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has ordered the immediate shutdown of the Onitsha Main Market for one week over what he described as persistent economic sabotage disguised as the “Monday sit-at-home.”

The governor made this declaration on Monday, warning that the directive would henceforth apply to any market across the state found shutting down on Mondays in compliance with the sit-at-home order.

According to Soludo, the decision was taken after careful consideration, stressing that no individual or group has the right to cripple the economy or endanger the livelihoods of law-abiding citizens.

“This action is not taken lightly. I am determined to protect the economic interests of Anambra State and its people. No one has the authority to halt the lives and livelihoods of our citizens,” the governor stated.

He urged traders, market leaders, and other stakeholders to ignore calls for sit-at-home and resume normal business activities, emphasizing that the practice has continued to inflict severe economic hardship on residents and businesses.

Governor Soludo further warned individuals or groups aiding and abetting the enforcement of the sit-at-home order that the state government would no longer tolerate such actions.

“Our government will take all necessary measures to ensure the security and safety of lives and property across the state,” he said.

Reassuring residents, the governor called on Ndi Anambra to go about their lawful businesses without fear, noting that his administration remains committed to safeguarding the state’s economy and maintaining Anambra’s status as a major hub for trade, investment, and enterprise.

“Let us stand together against economic sabotage and work collectively to build a prosperous and brighter future for our state,” Soludo added.

He concluded with a message of optimism, saying, “May Anambra continue to win.”
