Rivers State Government Denies Rally Ban, Confirms Yakubu Gowon Stadium Under Renovation

The Rivers State Government has refuted claims of banning rallies at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Elekahia, describing the allegations as false, politically motivated, and potentially divisive.

The state explained that the stadium is currently under major reconstruction, making it unsafe for large gatherings. Barrister Chris Green, Coordinating Commissioner for Sports and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, emphasized that no formal application to use the stadium had been submitted.

> “The Yakubu Gowon Stadium is a work zone with ongoing construction, heavy equipment, and sensitive installations. If anyone claims otherwise, let them show evidence,” Green said while guiding journalists on a tour.

The renovation, managed by Monimichelie Sports Construction Company, is aimed at upgrading the stadium to FIFA and World Athletics standards. Engineer Michael Ebitenye noted that over 40,000 pipes are buried beneath the pitch, making it fragile and unsafe for crowds.

> “Any heavy movement on the pitch can destroy the entire drainage network of this FIFA-standard facility. It is not safe for public use,” Ebitenye explained.

The government stressed that this decision is strictly safety-driven, not political. Alternative venues such as Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium and Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic remain available for political rallies and public events.

Dr. Honour Sirawoo, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communications, urged political actors to avoid provocative claims that could harm Rivers State’s image.
Checks across relevant offices confirmed that no application had been submitted for the stadium, reinforcing the government’s stance.

“There is no letter. It is not enough to make allegations without evidence, especially when such statements can harm the image and cohesion of the state,” Sirawoo added.

The government assured that any properly requested government facility would be approved for events promoting peace and development in Rivers State.

The controversy was also reported by Channels Television, a reputable Nigerian news outlet, which confirmed that the Rivers State Government denied blocking access to the stadium due to its ongoing reconstruction. (channelstv.com).
