NCSU Urges President Tinubu to Intervene in Rivers Political Crisis, Warns Against Destabilization

The Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Rivers State Council, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene in the escalating political tension in Rivers State, warning that the situation could threaten peace, stability, and democratic governance in the state.

In a letter dated January 6, 2026, and signed by the Rivers State Chairman of the union, Comrade Chukwuka R. Osumah-JP, the NCSU expressed concern that the relative political calm enjoyed in the state after the period of emergency rule is gradually giving way to renewed struggles for supremacy and control of state governance.
The union specifically accused the former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, of making comments and engaging in political actions capable of destabilizing the administration of Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara. According to the union, such actions allegedly include inciting members of the Rivers State House of Assembly believed to be loyal to the minister, with the aim of frustrating the current state government.

The NCSU further alleged that the FCT Minister has commenced political campaigns across local government areas in Rivers State to unseat the sitting governor in the next political dispensation, an action the union described as inappropriate and contrary to constitutional norms.

Warning against the dangers of escalating political hostilities, the union called on President Tinubu to caution the minister, stressing that continued political tension could heighten insecurity and undermine governance in the state.
“The Nigeria Civil Service Union, Rivers State Council, alongside the State Joint Public Service Negotiation Council and the Trade Union Congress, will not fold its arms and allow a one-man actor to destabilize the state,” the letter stated.

The union emphasized that Governor Siminalayi Fubara should be allowed to carry out his constitutional responsibilities without distractions or undue interference, noting that political instability would ultimately deprive Rivers people of the dividends of democracy.

The NCSU concluded by appealing to President Tinubu to come to the aid of Rivers State and its people in the interest of peace, good governance, and democratic stability.
The union noted that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly believed to be loyal to the FCT Minister do not mean well for the State and the people, as they are out to serve their selfish interest and the interest of the Minister, and regretted the current actions of Chief Wike.

It recalled that for over 16 years, the administrations of Chief Nyesom Wike and Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi had subjected civil servants to untold servitude and hardship, as their welfare needs and well-being were never prioritised, and regretted that now that Governor Fubara has shown commitment to reverse the trend by putting food on their table, the forces of darkness are desperately working hard to frustrate the good plans of the current administration towards the workforce.
