Gov. Douye Diri Pays Tribute to Late Uncle

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has paid glowing tribute to his late uncle, Chief Jothan Michael Diri, describing him as a man of wisdom, humility, courage and deep love for humanity.

Governor Diri spoke in Sampou, his country home, during the funeral rites of the elder statesman, who died at the age of 83.
According to the governor, the late Chief Jothan Diri was not only an uncle but also a father figure and grandfather whose life was defined by sound principles, generosity and vast public service experience.

He noted that the values of peace, love and unity which guide his leadership style were deeply rooted in the family upbringing exemplified by the late Chief Jothan.
“Growing up, Uncle Jothan was that rare uncle who gave honest advice and made everyone around him feel valued,” Governor Diri said, adding that the deceased was a gentleman with unmatched principles and a true symbol of love.

The governor further described the late Chief Diri, fondly known as “Sei Okolai,” as a man of great social standing, elegance and vibrant personality, whose popularity and connection with the people naturally led him into politics.
“It was therefore not surprising that Uncle Jothan became an astute politician, and interestingly, a few of us later followed in his footsteps,” he remarked.

On behalf of the Diri family, Governor Diri expressed gratitude to leaders and people of Bayelsa State and beyond who came to Sampou to honour the memory of the departed elder.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of his uncle, describing his life as one of enduring legacy.

Chief Jothan Michael Diri is survived by children, grandchildren and extended family members.
