Fubara Applauds Tinubu’s Push to Strengthen Nigeria’s Military

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his sustained efforts to build a strong, well-equipped and motivated Nigerian military capable of defending the nation’s sovereignty and addressing internal security challenges.
The governor spoke on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in Port Harcourt during the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, where he praised the President’s focus on modern military hardware and improved welfare for personnel.

Governor Fubara said the Tinubu administration’s emphasis on capacity-building and enhanced welfare had boosted morale within the armed forces and contributed to measurable gains in the fight against terrorism and other security threats.
“We commend our President for equipping our armed forces with modern weapons and motivating them through significantly improved salaries and welfare packages,” he said. “These efforts have translated into visible successes in the fight against Boko Haram and other associated terrorist groups.”

He assured that the Rivers State Government would continue to support the Federal Government, the armed forces and other security agencies in sustaining peace and stability within the state and across the country.

Reflecting on the sacrifices of Nigerian troops, Governor Fubara noted that soldiers are deployed across the nation to confront diverse security challenges, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry and kidnappings in the North-West and North-Central, as well as pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft in the South.
According to him, the history of the Nigerian military is defined by profound sacrifice, with many personnel paying the supreme price in the First and Second World Wars, the civil war and various peacekeeping missions, as well as in ongoing operations against terrorists and bandits.

He urged Nigerians to honour fallen heroes and support serving personnel, veterans and Gold Star families, stressing that the freedoms enjoyed today are safeguarded by the sacrifices of the armed forces.

As part of his administration’s commitment, Governor Fubara reaffirmed continued logistical support to military formations in Rivers State and improved welfare for members of the Nigerian Legion and their families. He also directed the Secretary to the Rivers State Government to immediately commence employment processes for children of legionnaires and fallen heroes in fulfilment of an earlier pledge.
In his remarks, the Acting Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Rivers State, ACC Kuu Aminkipo Promise, thanked the governor for sponsoring the 2026 remembrance event and for the N100 million donation by the state government, describing the gesture as exceptional.

Earlier, Governor Fubara inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and the Nigerian Legion during a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph in Isaac Boro Park. He, alongside other dignitaries, laid wreaths in honour of fallen heroes and released a pigeon to symbolise peace.
