Diri Calls for Improved Welfare of Military Personnel at 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Yenagoa
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reiterated the need to prioritise the welfare and well-being of serving and retired military personnel, describing it as a collective responsibility of government and society.
Governor Diri made the call on Thursday during the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Peace Park in Yenagoa, where he joined Service Commanders and other leaders in the state to honour fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.
According to the governor, the sacrifices of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, both past and present, must never be forgotten, stressing that their dedication has continued to guarantee the peace, unity and sovereignty of the country.
“For me, the welfare and well-being of both serving and former military personnel should remain our top priority,” Governor Diri said. “They deserve our utmost support for their selfless service to the nation.”
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, as well as the senior military leadership, for their sustained efforts at improving the conditions of service and overall welfare of officers and men of the Armed Forces.
Governor Diri expressed satisfaction with the ongoing reforms and initiatives aimed at boosting morale within the military, noting that such efforts are critical to maintaining a professional and effective fighting force.
He congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day and urged citizens to continue to honour the memories of fallen heroes and support their families.
The ceremony featured the traditional laying of wreaths, military parades and prayers for peace, as participants reflected on the courage and sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen servicemen and women.
