BREAKING: Seven Governors Resist APC as Defections Intensify Ahead of 2027

Amid a sustained wave of political defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), seven state governors have so far resisted pressure to join the party, even as the APC consolidates power ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Vanguard Newspaper reports that the latest defection, announced early this week, has further strengthened the APC’s grip on the political landscape, leaving only a handful of governors outside the ruling party’s fold.

The governors still standing outside the APC are Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Alex Otti (Abia), Ademola Adeleke (Osun) and Chukwuma Soludo (Anambra).

The growing defection trend has been driven by political calculations ahead of 2027, with defecting governors citing the need to align with the Federal Government for development, stability and access to power at the centre.

Despite mounting pressure, the seven governors have maintained their party affiliations, banking on local political structures, electoral mandates and performance records to sustain their positions.

Political observers told Vanguard that the coming months will be critical, as opposition parties face increasing strain while the APC continues to expand its influence across the states.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the fate of the remaining non-APC governors is expected to remain under intense political scrutiny.
