In a major political development in Rivers State politics, the Presidency has officially affirmed Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the recognized leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. The confirmation strengthens Governor Fubara’s authority within the ruling party and is widely seen as a strategic move to stabilize the APC structure in Rivers State amid ongoing political tensions and internal party realignments.
Speaking on Channels Television, the National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, made the clarification during the Hard Copy programme, stating clearly that “Governor Siminalayi Fubara is the leader of the APC in Rivers State.” He explained that within the APC’s established tradition, a sitting governor automatically assumes leadership of the party in his state, while emphasizing the need for unity, consultation, and cooperation among party leaders and stakeholders.
The affirmation comes against the backdrop of a prolonged political crisis in Rivers State involving Governor Fubara and former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. The political standoff has generated widespread debate across Nigeria, affecting governance, legislative activities, and party cohesion within the oil-rich state.
Political analysts believe the Presidency’s stance signals strong federal recognition of Governor Fubara’s leadership and could significantly alter the balance of power within Rivers State. The development is also expected to ease tensions within the APC, reduce factional divisions, and help reposition the party for future political engagements, including preparations toward the 2027 general elections.
Observers further note that the confirmation may improve governance stability in Rivers State by reinforcing executive authority and encouraging collaboration between party leaders. Many APC supporters see the move as a step toward restoring order, strengthening internal democracy, and refocusing attention on governance, economic development, and service delivery to the people of Rivers State.
