Yenagoa — Leaders and people of Bayelsa State on Tuesday gathered at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa, for a series of sporting activities that marked the official commencement of the funeral rites of the late Deputy Governor of the state, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Ph.D.
The sporting events, which included a novelty football match, 4x100 metres relay races, tug of war and traditional wrestling, were organised in honour of the late Deputy Governor’s profound love for sports and his strong commitment to youth development and sporting excellence under the Government of Assured Prosperity.
Speaking at the event, Governor Douye Diri described the activities as a fitting tribute to a man whose passion for sports contributed significantly to the many sporting milestones recorded by Bayelsa State in recent years. He noted that the late Deputy Governor believed strongly in sports as a unifying force and a tool for empowering young people across the state.
The Governor was accompanied by his wife, Hon. Justice (Mrs.) Patience Zuofa Diri. Other dignitaries in attendance included members of the National Assembly, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, and other lawmakers, the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye, alongside other judges, members of the State Executive Council, Service Commanders, top government officials, friends and well-wishers.
Governor Diri described the occasion as deeply emotional and nostalgic, noting that it marked the beginning of the final journey to bid farewell to a trusted partner in governance and a beloved son of Bayelsa State.
“As we gather with other Bayelsans to honour his memory, we are reminded of his dedication, loyalty and invaluable contributions to our administration and to the development of our state,” the Governor said.
He added that the late Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo would be greatly missed, not only by the government but by the entire people of Bayelsa State whose lives he touched through service, leadership and mentorship.
The funeral activities are expected to continue in the coming days, with various programmes lined up to celebrate the life, legacy and enduring impact of the late Deputy Governor.
