NCSU Warns Group Against Reception For Wike

The Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) has warned a Kalabari group in Rivers State against organizing a grand reception for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, considering the volatile and tense political atmosphere in the State, saying, the reception for the Minister coming at this time is unnecessary, as it portends grave danger for the State and the people.

The Rivers State Chairman of NCSU, Comrade Chukwuka Richman Osumah, who gave the indication in an interview in Port Harcourt, said the reception planned by the group for the Minister is capable of igniting more crisis and confusion for the State if not put on hold, considering the tense political atmosphere in the State.

While calling on the group to shelve the reception in the interest of peace, Osumah wondered why Wike would gleefully accept to be honoured at this time, instead of staying in Abuja to concentrate on his job, describing the planned reception for the Minister as preconceived, unnecessary and ill-timed.

According to him, it amounts to childishness and mischief of immense proportion for Wike to accept such honour at a time when tempers are flaring up in the State as a result of the Supreme Court judgments.

He also cautioned Wike against coming to Rivers State now to cause mayhem and confusion, and wondered why he (Wike) should be celebrating while his State is literally on fire, going by the festering political crisis currently rocking the State, and urged him to demonstrate and exhibit the highest sense of statesmanship befitting his office and political status, rather than continuously fueling the political crisis and plunging the State into needless pandemonium.

He equally appealed to President Bola Tinubu to advise the Minister and prevail on him to give peace a chance, saying, both the Minister and the country stand to benefit nothing if peace, law and order are threatened in the State.

Osumah said his warning has become imperative going by the growing feelers of insecurity and breakdown of law and order which the planned reception forebodes, especially as other groups are threatening to organise similar receptions at the same time in honour of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

He said there is the need for Wike in particular to always put on his thinking cap, to weigh and evaluate the consequences of his actions as a respected statesman, contending that the future and wellbeing of the children of the State and those yet unborn, which are paramount, should always guide the actions and utterances of political leaders.

According to him, the time has come for all lovers of the State to embrace peace and genuine reconciliation, instead of needlessly fanning the ambers of war.

The labour leader, therefore, enjoined Wike to reconsider his decision to present himself for the grand reception planned for him by the group since, according to him, "a stitch in time, saves nine."
